New I-40 Rest Areas in Johnston County Now Open - Rest areas showcase local agriculture industry

RALEIGH - The Interstate 40 East and West rest areas in Benson have reopened today -just in time for motorists traveling through Johnston County this holiday season. Both rest areas closed to traffic in March as part of a project to modernize and expand the 23 year-old facilities, as well as bring them up to standards that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Approximately 719,000 people used both rest areas combined in 2012.The N.C. Department of Transportation awarded a $1.5 million contract to Calvin Davenport Inc. in January for the project. The new buildings feature LED light fixtures and a new solar thermal hot water system, which will provide lower energy costs. To better accommodate travelers, the number and size of stalls in each rest area have increased, and a family rest room has been included in each facility. Additionally, the exterior and interior design of the rest areas showcase North Carolina's number one industry -agriculture. Photos of the rest areas prior to opening can be found at NCDOT's Flickr page.
