RALEIGH Overnight closures will be in place this week on Interstate 26 West at Exit 31B in Asheville as crews perform rehabilitation work on the bridge over I-40 East.
The closures will take place from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. starting Tuesday, Aug. 20, and ending at 6 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 23.
The work will involve jacking the bridge in order to replace the bearing plates. The bridge beams rest on the bearings and enable the bridge to expand and contract as temperatures fluctuate. Additionally, the bearings absorb shock as vehicles travel over the bridge.
During the closure, motorists traveling on I-26 West attempting to access I-40 West will use the following signed detour route:
Take Exit 31-A (Hickory/Biltmore Estate) to merge onto I-40 East. On I-40 East, take Exit 47 for N.C. 191 (West Asheville/Farmers Market). At the signal, turn right onto N.C. 191, and then turn right to take the I-40 West ramp.
The work is part of a $3.2 million rehabilitation project involving substructure and surface repairs to lengthen the life of several bridges in Buncombe County. The project contractor is American Contracting Services Inc. of Jeffersonville, Indiana.
