RALEIGH - A pair of wooden bridges in Chatham County will be replaced by N.C.
Department of Transportation projects scheduled to start Monday, Dec. 2. One
will put a new bridge over Little Brush Creek on Oakley Church Road between
Airport Road and Siler City-Glendon Road near Siler City. The other project will
replace the bridge on Edwards Hill Church Road over Bear Creek just north of
N.C. 902 between Bonlee and the Hickory Grove Community.
A $486,754 contract was awarded to Smith-Rowe, LLC of Mount Airy to
remove the 58-year-old Oakley Church Road bridge. It has weight restrictions that
force larger trucks to find another route through the area, a problem that will
be solved by the new concrete structure.
The removal of the bridge means a signed detour will be in place,
using Airport Road, Bonlee-Bennett Road and Siler City-Glendon Road.
Dellinger, Inc. of Monroe was awarded an $821,932 contract for the
Edwards Hill Church Road project, which will replace a 47-year-old
structurally-deficient bridge that has weight restrictions, also with a
concrete bridge that won't have the weight limits.
The detour for this project sends motorists onto N.C. 902, Siler
City-Glendon Road, and Palmer Chapel Road.
Both projects are scheduled to be done within 120 days of their start,
which would be early April, 2014.
NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information.
These projects are part of the department's overall bridge
program to improve the condition of the state's bridges to provide better
