SHELBY -The new
Radio Road bridge over Interstate 40 opened late Friday afternoon as part of
improvements to the I-40/77 interchange in Statesville.
The reconstructed bridge is higher and longer than the previous bridge
to accommodate for the widening of I-40 below. Sidewalks were also added,
making the bridge more pedestrian-friendly.
The original bridge, built in 1960, was torn down in April.
The North Carolina Department of Transportion's $89.1 million Interstate
40/77 interchange improvement project is scheduled for completion in
March 2017.
The N.C. Department of Transportation reminds motorists to
watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed
limit. Follow the project on the NCDOT website or on Twitter (#DOTStatesville)
on NCDOT's Eastern Mountain feed.
