Roadway Work Planned for the Columbus County Courthouse Loop on Next Two Weekends

RALEIGH - Resurfacing work on the U.S. 74/76 Business and U.S. 701 Business loop around the Columbus County courthouse in Whiteville is scheduled for the next two weekends.

On Saturday, Oct. 19, a contractor will begin milling the roadway to prep it for a new surface, weather permitting. Then on the following Saturday morning, Oct. 26, crews will return to do the paving work.

Because it is a single lane loop, flagmen will be in place to direct traffic onto side streets before motorists approach the courthouse to keep them away from the construction area.

The resurfacing is needed as the loop was recently narrowed to accommodate outside curbs and gutters that were moved for a sidewalk improvement project. That work, done this past summer, saw the installation of new wider sidewalks and handicapped ramps to accommodate pedestrians who will be using the new Columbus County Courthouse Annex.

NCDOT reminds motorists to watch for signs with construction information and stay alert when approaching a construction area. Updated travel information is also available by calling 511 or online at www.ncdot.gov/travel. In addition, NCDOT now offers travel information on Twitter.
