CHARLOTTE -The N.C. Department of Transportation is preparing for another traffic shift on the $92.2 million reconstruction of the I-85/I-485 interchange in north Charlotte. Weather permitting, traffic will be shifted to the new exit ramp from I-85 South to the I-485 Inner Loop (Exit 48) starting at 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 24. This ramp is the second of several contractor Lane Construction will open over the next few weeks as part of converting the existing interchange to a turbine design, the first of its kind in North Carolina.
The existing two-way ramp will remain in place for approximately two weeks while crews prepare for the next traffic shift. Motorists will still be able to use the existing entrance ramp from the I-485 Outer Loop to I-85 South (Exit 31). The other side of the ramp will only be available to construction vehicles.
Ground-mounted signs and speed limit signs in the vicinity of the existing ramp will be relocated during the traffic shift. All traffic control will be removed by 6 a.m. Thursday, July 25.
The project is scheduled to be completed in August 2014.
