Section of U.S. 15-501 in Downtown Pittsboro to be Closed Overnight Tonight; One Lane Will Re-Open for Wednesday Morning Rush Hour

RALEIGH - The contractor for the Town of Pittsboro's water main replacement project along U.S. 15-501 will be closing the road entirely between Launis and Thompson streets just north of the downtown traffic circle, starting at 8 p.m. tonight. One lane of the road will be re-opened at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, April 24, and flagmen will direct traffic through the construction area. The one-lane traffic pattern is expected to remain in effect until Wednesday afternoon, when the other lane will be opened to accommodate the afternoon rush hour.
The work is expected to have a significant traffic impact and drivers are urged to avoid the area if possible. For travel between Sanford and Chapel Hill, an alternate route is U.S. 64 Bypass. Northbound N.C. 87 drivers should remain on that highway until getting to the Bypass, then go east to get to U.S. 15-501. Southbound motorists should head west on the Bypass, and then follow N.C. 87 south to US 15-501.
Since there will be significant night-time work, NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit. Updated travel information is also available by calling 511 or online at www.ncdot.gov/travel. In addition, NCDOT now offers travel information on Twitter.
