Concrete supports, deck work part of
preservation project; lane closure in work zone
RALEIGH - The N.C. Department of Transportation has
temporarily closed the Sharon School Road bridge off Exit 141 over Interstate
40 west of Statesville to repair the concrete bridge piers that support the
bridge. One lane of I-40 will be closed in the work zone during the day for
crews to replace the concrete, as well as complete any cleaning and painting
structural steel and bearings under the bridge.
The new concrete
should take a couple of days to cure. At the same time, crews from Lanford
Brothers Company Inc. of Roanoke, Va. will be removing the bridge decking and
replacing it with a latex concrete overlay. The detour may stay in place while
this work is being done. Weather permitting, the project is scheduled to be
completed by June 1.
rehabilitation project is part of a $3.7 million contract awarded last May to
rehab eight bridges in Iredell County and four in Catawba County.
While the bridge is
closed, motorists can take the following detour route:
- For northbound traffic, take I-40 east to Old Mountain Road to I-40
West back onto Sharon School Road.
- For southbound traffic, take I-40 West to Oxford School Road to
I-40 East back onto Sharon School Road.
