Traffic will be detoured Thursday, most of Friday
N.C. Department of Transportation will close a section of U.S. 221 west of
Sparta tomorrow morning to repair a slope next to the highway damaged due to
recent storms. The repairs are scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. on Thursday and be
completed by 3:30 p.m. on Friday, March 8, weather permitting.
and runoff from heavy rains loosened the soil on the long, steep bank next to
U.S. 221. Crews will haul in large rocks to rebuild the embankment.
While the closure is
in place, motorists will take the following 23-mile detour route:
- Travelers coming out of Sparta will take U.S. 21
to U.S. 221 South, turn right onto N.C. 93 West to N.C. 113 South.
- Traffic traveling on N.C. 113 North will turn
right onto N.C. 93 East to U.S. 221.
- Traffic coming out of Ashe County on U.S. 221
will turn left on N.C. 113 North to N.C. 93 East back to U.S. 221.
