CHARLOTTE -The N.C. Department of Transportation will
tonight temporarily close two lanes of the I-277 (John Belk Freeway) Outer
Loop, as well as the ramp to I-77 North, and the southbound I-77 ramp onto the
I-277 Outer Loop. The closures will be in place from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. on
Wednesday, weather permitting. The ramps will also be closed for the same time
frame on Wednesday and Thursday nights, as well as Sunday night.
The closures are needed so contractor crews can safely work on the
I-277 bridge over I-77 at that location. It is part of a $5 million bridge
preservation project that will improve 15 bridges on the two interstates.
Signed detours will direct motorists around the ramp closures.
This project was included in NCDOT's $430 million bridge plan for
2011-2012, which called for preservation, repair or replacement of 450 bridges
statewide. This type of project extends the life of a bridge at a cost
significantly lower than continually repairing or even replacing the bridge.
NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information,
stay alert and obey the posted speed limit. Know before you go by calling 511,
