RALEIGH
-
Drivers on U.S. 15-501 just north of the downtown traffic circle in Pittsboro
will encounter lane closures starting tonight and throughout the week as crews
make roadway repairs as part of the town's waterline replacement project.
Starting
at 7 p.m. tonight, crews will close a 1,000-foot section of the southbound lane
of the highway between Park Drive and Thompson Street. A flagman operation will
be in place for traffic control.
Concrete
work will take place overnight, and asphalt paving will start in the morning.
The initial closure is expected to remain in place until Tuesday afternoon,
with the contractor planning to have both lanes open for the evening rush hour.
The same schedule will be in place each night through Thursday night, April 25,
weather permitting.
The
work is expected to have a significant traffic impact and drivers are urged to
avoid the area if possible. For commuters traveling between Sanford and
Chapel Hill, an alternate route is U.S. 64 Bypass. Northbound N.C. 87 drivers
should remain on that highway until getting to the Bypass, then go east to get
to U.S. 15-501. Southbound motorists should head west on the Bypass, and then
follow N.C. 87 south to US 15-501.
Since
there will be significant night-time work with flagmen on the roadway, NCDOT
reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and
obey the posted speed limit. Updated travel information is also available by
calling 511 or online at www.ncdot.gov/travel. In
