RALEIGH - The combination of heavy rain from Tropical Storm Andrea and a
beaver dam led to the partial collapse of Briggs Road in western Harnett
County.
The area received more than five inches of rain in recent days,
causing a major storm flow into the culvert carrying Big Branch Creek under
Briggs Road. Unfortunately, the culvert was partially blocked by a beaver dam
so water backed up. The culvert eventually overloaded to the point that the
water surge took out a section of the road.
Emergency repairs are expected to begin next week, and should be
completed the first week of July. In the meantime, a three-mile signed detour is
in place telling motorists to use Cypress Church Road and Cypress Road to get
around the closure.
NCDOT reminds
