NCDOT is assessing needed repairs; all eastbound lanes will close around noon Wednesday
CHARLOTTE -The N.C. Department of Transportation will leave two of three eastbound lanes closed on Wilkinson Boulevard (U.S. 74) between Old Dowd Road and Sam Wilson Road in Charlotte through midday Wednesday, July 16. Recent heavy rains have formed a washout under the roadway, exposing a utility pipe and leaving a significant void under the pavement.
NCDOT maintenance crews will close all eastbound lanes around noon Wednesday to get a camera under the road, which will help determine the cause and extent of damage. Motorists will follow a signed detour from Wilkinson Boulevard to Old Dowd Road to Sam Wilson Road back to Wilkinson Boulevard.
Engineers estimate opening the eastbound lanes by Monday morning, July 22, if additional rain doesn't hinder progress.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use I-85 as an alternate route.
