UPDATE: Tanker crash closes U.S. 64, traffic detoured as wreckage cleared

All lanes have re-opened on U.S. 64, and the normal traffic pattern is in place. SHELBY -Traffic along U.S. 64 west of Murphy will be detoured today as crews work to clear an overnight tanker truck crash that has shut down the highway.

About 2:45 a.m. today, a truck carrying 8,000 gallons of gasoline overturned on U.S. 19/64/74/129. No gasoline spilled, but the road was closed as a precaution as emergency crews assess the wreckage and determine how to remove it safely.

The gasoline must first be pumped from the truck into another tanker, and removed from the crash site before the truck can be placed upright. The closure is expected to be in effect through about 3 p.m. today.

While the road is closed, motorists are asked to use the following detours:

  • Truck traffic traveling eastbound should take U.S. 19/129 South to Blairsville, Ga., then U.S. 76 East to N.C. 69. That road intersects with U.S. 64, where drivers can resume their routes back to Murphy or Asheville.
  • Local traffic is asked to take Caney Creek Road, then go left on Crisp Road to Martins Creek Road. A left on Martins Creek Road takes drivers back to U.S. 64.
  • Traffic traveling westbound on U.S. 64/74 should reverse the detours.
