Starting tonight at 10 p.m., the N.C. Department of Transportation
will close a portion of U.S. 64 East
in Rocky Mount to allow crews to perform repairs on the northbound bridge over U.S. 64 on Winstead Avenue. U.S. 64 East will reopen at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, July 23, with the closure repeating tomorrow at 10 p.m. and ending at 5 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24.This work is part of a project to widen Winstead Avenue to four lanes with a median from south of Hunter Hill Road to U.S. 64, and to six lanes with a median from U.S. 64 to Sunset Avenue. Repairs to the northbound bridge deck must be made before crews can continue resurfacing the bridge as part of the widening project. The northbound bridge is currently closed, with both directions of traffic using the southbound bridge.During the closure, eastbound traffic on U.S. 64 will take the exit for Winstead Avenue, cross Winstead Avenue and take the entrance ramp back on to U.S. 64 East. A $13.9 million contract was awarded in July 2011 to Barnhill Contracting Co. of Tarboro for the project. The project is currently scheduled to be complete this fall, weather permitting.
