RALEIGH -
A culvert pipe collapse caused by the on-rush of water from a collapsed beaver
dam has closed Sam Moss Hayes Road, northeast of Creedmor in Granville County.
It appears the recent heavy rain caused a buildup of water behind the dam,
which was built at the culvert that carried a creek under the road. Sometime
overnight, the water pressure collapsed the dam, and the force of water washed
out the pipe and a section of roadway.
An emergency repair plan is being put
together, with work on the roadway expected to start Monday, May 13. The road
is expected to re-open by Friday, May 24. A signed detour will get motorists
around the closure by using Hester Road and U.S. 15.
NCDOT reminds motorists to watch
signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
