RALEIGH - On Monday, Feb. 24, the N.C. Department of Transportation will close a section of Red Hill Road in order for crews with Smith-Rowe, LLC. to replace the bridge over Welches Creek in Whiteville. The bridge is scheduled to reopen July 15, weather permitting.
The bridge, which was constructed in 1947, is classified as structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. This means the bridge is safe, but it needs to be replaced to meet current and future traffic demands.
Motorists should follow the posted detour of Whitehall Road, Sikes Road, Old Glade Road, Tom Sessions Road and Farmers Union Road during the closure.
NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
