Bridge Replacement to Close Road in Matthews Beginning Next Week

RALEIGH - The N.C. Department of Transportation will begin construction replacing the bridge over North Fork Crooked Creek Tributary on Steven's Mill Road on Monday, June 23. Crews will close Steven's Mill Road between Idlewild Road and Stallings Road. Work on the bridge is expected to be completed by Wednesday, November 19.A detour route will be in place during this time, using Stallings Road, Idlewild Road and Steven's Mill Road to give motorists access to residences and businesses on either side of the bridge construction area. The bridge was constructed in 1958 and is classified as structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. This means it has remained safe for use, but is in deteriorating condition and needs to be replaced. The bridge was also built to design standards that are no longer in use.Because of its condition, NCDOT posted a weight limit restricting single-axle vehicles and trucks weighing more than 15 tons from using the bridge. The new bridge will meet current design standards and will not have posted weight limits. Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area and to expect delays. NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
