Bridge to Be Replaced Near School in Forsyth County

Construction planned mostly during summer monthsRaleigh-- The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a $912,000 contact to Smith-Rowe, LLC of Mount Airy to replace the bridge on Hastings Hill Road over Kerner's Mill Creek in Walkertown. Beginning May 4, 2015, NCDOT contractors will close a section of Hastings Hill Road in Forsyth County for the replacement of the bridge. Construction will take place primarily when school is not in session, mainly during summer months. The road is expected to reopen by August 20. "School lets out June 7th and the kids return on August 25th", said Trish Gainey, East Forsyth High School principal. She said she appreciates that most of the work will be done while school is not in session. The bridge was built more than 50 years ago and needs to be replaced because it was determined to be both structurally deficient and functionally obsolete.Replacing the bridge with a wider and safer bridge will benefit everyone in the area as this is a heavily traveled commuter route averaging 5800 vehicles per day.
