Bridge to Be Replaced on Buffalo Road in Stokes County

RALEIGH -N.C. Department of Transportation contractors next month will begin replacing the bridge on Buffalo Road over Big Beaver Island Creek in Stokes County. On Monday, Jan. 12th, crews will close the road in both directions between N.C. 704 and N.C. 770. Motorists will still be able to access residences and businesses on either side of the bridge construction area up to the points of closure. Construction should be completed and the road reopened by Friday, June 12th.Motorists traveling through the area can use the signed detour route and are advised to use caution in the area and allow additional travel time to reach their destinations safely. This project is part of the department's statewide bridge program to improve the condition of the state's bridges. The current bridge was built in 1967 and is considered structurally deficient. That means while it remains safe, it is in deteriorating condition, needed more constant monitoring and should be replaced. The new bridge will be built to current design standards and will improve the approach roadway at the bridge location. For more information about funding for infrastructure improvements in North Carolina, as well as other NCDOT projects and activities, visit .
