SHELBY-TheN.C. Department of Transportationis replacing a Cleveland County bridge and will need to close part of a road near Shelbyduring construction.
Beginning Monday, Nov. 24, Lafayette Street will close from Wellmon Road to Zion Church Road for the bridge replacement and construction. The closure will remain in place until May 2015.
Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes.
The bridge spans a creek and was built in 1952. It is classified as structurally deficient and functionally obsolete, which mean that although the bridge is safe for traffic, it was built to design standards no longer in use and requires costly maintenance to remain functional.
This bridge replacement is part of a $4 million contract to replace five bridges in Alexander, Catawba, Cleveland, Iredell and Lincoln counties. Dellinger, Inc. of Monroe is the project contractor.
