Final Bridge Girders Set on N.C. 268 Bridge; Concrete bridge deck to be poured in coming weeks

SHELBY -TheN.C. Department of Transportation, together with contractor Smith-Rowe, has completed setting the bridge girders on the N.C. 268 bridge over U.S. 52 in SurryCounty and will begin pouring the concrete bridge deck in the coming weeks. The bridge remains on schedule to be open to traffic by theend of 2014.

The Span A girders over U.S. 52 Southbound were set Sept. 16-17, more than a month ahead of the estimated Oct. 31 completion date. The Span B girders over U.S. 52 Northbound were set Sept. 9-10, about two weeks ahead of the estimated Sept. 26 completion date.

The next step of the bridge replacement process is pouring the bridge deck, which should begin in the next two weeks. The deck is the roadwaysurface vehicles drive over.
