SHELBY-- The traffic shift scheduled for tonight on the Interstate 40/77 interchange project in Statesville has been delayed 24 hours because of equipment issues.
On Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 8 p.m., theN.C. Department of Transportationwill begin the work to shiftI-40 Eastbound traffic at the U.S. 21 exit ramp, which isExit 151,onto anew detour. The U.S. 21 exit ramp will be closed during the traffic shift but will open by 6 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 6.
The new detour is expected to be in place some time between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Thursday.All traffic will shift at the U.S.21 exit ramp and will followthe detour to I-77 South or I-40 Eastbound.
Motorists traveling to U.S. 21 and I-77 South will have to use the interchange detour to access U.S. 21 and I-77 South.
Eastbound traffic heading to U.S. 21 will travel to I-77 Northbound at Exit 152, and then travel around the loop ramp to I-40 Westbound and head west to U.S. 21.
Eastbound traffic heading to I-77 Southbound can travel to I-77 Northbound at Exit 152 and travel around the loop ramp, staying toward I-40 West and then continuing around the loop ramp to I-77 Southbound.
Message boards will still be in place on I-40 East Bound at the US-21 Exit 151, as well as on the new detour at the US-21 ramp split and again at the I-77 South and I-40 East split.
