Icard School Road in Burke County to Close for Bridge Replacement Project

SHELBY -- TheN.C. Department of Transportationwill begin a bridge replacement project on Icard School Road in Burke County today. During the project, a portion of the roadwill be closed, and traffic will be detoured around the site.

Crews will remove and replace the Icard School Road bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad, which was builtin 1952. The bridge is considered functionally obsolete, which means that although the bridge is safe, it was built to design standards no longer in use.

During construction, a signed detour will be in place directing motoristsheading east on U.S.70 to take Tex's Fish Camp Roadto Mt. Harmony Road, which becomes Icard Rhodhiss Road, and then follow Icard Rhodhiss Roadto Icard School Road.Westbound motorists will reverse the detour.

The project should be finished by late March 2016.NHM Constructors LLC of Asheville was awarded the $1,524,436 contract to replace the bridge.
