SHELBY
Weather permitting, one lane of the U.S. 29/74 bridge over the Catawba River in
Gaston County will be closed Wednesday, Jan. 15, while crews assess bridge
maintenance needs.
The N.C. Department of Transportation will close
the right westbound lane of the bridge by 10 a.m. to investigate possible
repairs to the bridge's roadway and joints. Crews located a spot on the bridge
last week where the asphalt needed to be repaired. Since then, the spot has
been covered with a steel plate to prevent damage to vehicles until the
appropriate repairs can be made.
Wednesday's
investigation will help crews determine exactly what repairs the bridge needs.
Those repairs could begin as early as this week.
