The N.C. Department of Transportation
has permanently closed the Lyerly Street railroad crossing in Granite Quarry, southeast of Salisbury. As a result of the closing, East Lyerly Street will now end at Railroad Street. The closure is because of railroad crossing upgrades at East Bank Street, and Norfolk Southern's desire to minimize at-grade locations where vehicles cross railroad tracks to reduce or eliminate the chance of vehicle-train collisions.A new traffic pattern is in place. Motorists traveling on East Lyerly Street will turn onto Railroad Street, Depot Street and South Main Street to get back on West Lyerly Street. For real-time travel information at any time, call 511, visit www.ncdot.gov/travel or follow NCDOT on Twitter.
