Marlowe Road in McDowell County to Close Monday for Bridge Replacement

Shelby -Weather permitting, a portion of Marlowe Road (SR 1796)in McDowell County will be closed beginning Monday, February 17, to replace a bridge over North Muddy Creek. A detour will be in place during construction to help motorists navigate the closure.

The existing bridge over North Muddy Creek is considered structurally deficient and functionally obsolete, which mean that although the bridge is safe, it was built to design standards that are no longer in use. Once completed, the new structure will be wider than the existing bridge, which was built in 1943.

R.E. Burns and Sons Company, Inc. was awarded the $445,958 contract for the bridge replacement. The project is scheduled to be finished by the end of June.

Motorists traveling through the area will be asked to follow detour signs from Old Glenwood Road to N.C. 226 then back to Marlowe Road.
