NCDOT Awards $753,127 Contract to Replace Bridge on Carlton Chapel Church Road in Duplin County

RALEIGH - The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to replace a bridge on Carlton Chapel Church Road over Stewarts Creek in Warsaw.

The existing structure, built in 1967, is considered functionally obsolete and structurally deficient. This means that although the bridge is safe, it was built to standards no longer in use today. The new bridge will be able to accommodate larger and heavier vehicles.

The $753,127 contract was awarded to Fred Smith Company of Raleigh. The bridge replacement will begin March 3 and is scheduled for completion of all but landscaping by July 1. Final completion is expected in December.

A detour will be in place during construction to help motorists navigate the closure. Motorists will use Beasleys Mill Road, Perry Rivenbark Road and Charlie Frederick Road to get around the construction.

This project is an important investment in the long term viability of the state's transportation network and will help improve the overall health of the local infrastructure.

This was one of 28 contracts worth $282.3 million recently awarded by NCDOT for highway, bridge and ferry projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The winning bids for the projects came in almost five percent, or $14.2 million, below NCDOT estimates.
