Shelby
-The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a
contract to replace a bridge over Clark Creek on Old Conover-Startown Road in
Catawba County.
Contractor DeVere
Construction Company, Inc. was awarded the project with their bid of
$894,893.81. Work on the project is scheduled to begin in mid-March, with a
completion date of late February 2015.
The existing structure was
built in 1952 and is considered functionally obsolete, which means that
although the bridge is safe, it was built to standards no longer in use
today.
A detour will be in place
during construction to help motorists navigate the closure. Motorists will use
Startown Road, N.C. 10, U.S. 321 and St. Paul's Church Road to get around the
construction.
This was one of 28 contracts
worth $282.3 million recently awarded by NCDOT for highway, bridge and ferry
projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest
bidders, as required by state law. The winning bids for the projects came in
almost five percent, or $14.2 million, below NCDOT estimates.
