SHELBY -TheN.C. Department of Transportationhas awarded a contract to replace a bridge over Featherstone Creek on Locust Grove Road in Henderson County.
The bridge replacement project is scheduled to begin in June and will include grading, drainage, paving and replacing the bridge with a culvert. The existing bridge was built in 1963 and is considered both functionally obsolete and structurally deficient. That means that although the bridge is safe, it wasn't built to current design standards and needs to be replaced.
During construction, an off-site detour will be in place to help motorists navigate the road closure at Locust Grove Road. Motorists will take Stepp Road to McMinn Road, and then turn back to Locust Grove Road.
NHM Constructors, LLC., of Asheville, was awarded the $383,954 contract. All work except permanent vegetation establishment should be finished by mid-October.
This is one of the 17 road and bridge contracts worth $32.2 million recently awarded by NCDOT for projects across North Carolina. The contracts were awarded to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The low bids received on the projects were 8.5 percent, or almost $3 million below NCDOT estimates.
