-The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded
a contract for the widening, milling, shoulder reconstruction and resurfacing
of 19 miles of Burke County roads.
The project includes
improvements to three sections of U.S. 64, two sections of U.S. 70, one
section each of N.C. 114, U.S. 64/70 and U.S. 64/70 Business, and 24 sections
of secondary roads. Maymead, Inc., of Mountain City, Tenn., was awarded the
$2,881,906 contract.
Construction on the Burke
County road improvements can begin as early as mid-March, with the project
scheduled for completion by mid-October.
This was one of 28
contracts worth $282.3 million recently awarded by NCDOT for highway, bridge
and ferry projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the
lowest bidders, as required by state law. The winning bids for the projects
came in almost five percent, or $14.2 million, below NCDOT estimates.
