SHELBY -The N.C.
Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to replace a bridge over
Bald Creek on Upper Crabtree Road in Haywood County.
Simpson Construction Company, Inc. of Cleveland, Tenn., was
awarded the $1,025,223 contact for the project, which includes grading,
drainage, paving and replacing the existing bridge with a culvert. During
construction, traffic will be maintained on the existing structure.
The existing structure was built in 1969 and is considered
functionally obsolete, which means it was built to design standards no longer
in use.
Work can begin on the project as soon as late April, with
completion scheduled for mid-June 2015 for all work except reforestation.
This is one of the 25 road and bridge contracts worth $71
million recently awarded by NCDOT for projects across North Carolina. The
contracts were awarded to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The low
bids received on the projects were 1.2 percent, or $845,000 below NCDOT
estimates.
