NCDOT Awards Contract to Replace Bridge in Transylvania County

SHELBY--TheN.C. Department of Transportationhas awarded a contract to replace a bridge over the East Fork of the French Broad River on East Fork Road in Transylvania County.

The $667,796 contract was awarded to NHM Constructors, LLC of Asheville. The project includes replacing the existing bridge with a new structure, as well as replacing the bridge approaches, which are the parts of the bridge that carry traffic to the main structure.

The existing structure was built in 1951 and is considered functionally obsolete. This means that although the bridge is safe, it was built to design standards that are no longer in use.

Work on the project can begin in late May, with the project scheduled for completion in November 2015.

This is one of the 12 road and bridge contracts worth $403.6 million recently awarded by NCDOT for projects across North Carolina. The contracts were awarded to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The low bids received on the projects were 2.4 percent, or just over $10 million below NCDOT estimates.
