NCDOT Awards Contract to Replace Caldwell County Bridge

Shelby -TheN.C. Department of Transportationhas awarded a contract to begin replacing a bridge on U.S. 321-A over Little Gunpowder Creek.

The Caldwell County bridge will be replaced by Miller Engineering Company, who was awarded the $571,932 contract. The existing bridge was built in 1937 and is considered functionally obsolete. That means the bridge was built to standards no longer in use today, although it is still considered safe.

Construction is expected to begin in mid-March. Most work will be finished by mid-August, with permanent vegetation established by February 2015.

During construction, motorists will use a detour along Pine Mountain Road, Cedar Valley Road and U.S. 321-A.

This was one of 28 contracts worth $282.3 million recently awarded by NCDOT for highway, bridge and ferry projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The winning bids for the projects came in almost five percent, or $14.2 million, below NCDOT estimates.
