SHELBY-TheN.C. Department of Transportationhas awarded a $6.5millioncontract to replace a Jackson County bridge on U.S. 23/74 over Dark Ridge Road, theWatco/Blue RidgeRailroad and Scott Creek.

The existing bridge was built in 1957 and is classified as structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. That means although the bridge is safe, it was built to outdated design standards and needs to be replaced to meet current and future traffic demands.

Construction on the project can begin as early as August 25. All work on the project except for reforestation is scheduled to be completed by November 2016.

During bridge construction, traffic onU.S. 23/74 will be maintained without a detour.
