NCDOT Bridge on Upper Lake Road Reopens Improving Public, and Emergency Traffic Flow in Davidson County

WINSTON-SALEM - The N.C. Department of Transportation opened Upper Lake Road between the Martin Marietta Quarry entrance and the Hanes Paving entrance south of Thomasville on Tuesday, Oct. 21, replacing an at-grade rail crossing with a modern bridge over the railroad tracks.

The work for the Upper Lake Road Grade Separation is a part of the Piedmont Improvement Program, allows for non-stop traffic flow for the public and emergency service vehicles that previously had to stop at the railroad crossing. The new bridge will improve safety for the motorists using the road and for the 30 or more freight trains and 12 daily passenger trains that use these tracks every day; traveling at various speeds with some reaching 79 miles per hour.

A final layer of asphalt will be added in the days to come so the transition from roadway to bridge back to roadway will be smooth.
NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
