NCDOT Crews Prepared for Winter Weather in the Foothills

Shelby -The N.C. Department of Transportation is monitoring the possibility of adverse weather conditions in the North Carolina foothills and is prepared to treat roads for snow or ice, as needed.

Any precipitation today inNCDOT's Division 12, which includes Alexander, Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell and Lincoln counties, is expected to begin as rain, sothere are currently no plans to pre-treat the roads with brine. Raindilutes the brine and washes it off roads.

The National Weather Service, however, is forecasting bitterly cold temperatures for the region starting Wednesday, so motorists are encouraged to slow down and be on the lookout for possible icy patches. NCDOT crews will use salt and sand to treat any spots on the road that might cause adverse driving conditions.

Travelers are asked NOT to call 911 or the State Highway Patrol for road conditions. The lines must remain clear for emergency calls.
