SHELBY-To help combatbloodsupply shortages, theN.C. Department ofTransportation's Division 12 sponsored a community blood drive Tuesday in Shelby.
Community Blood Center of the Carolinas brought itsmobile unit to the Division 12 office, where employees and community members togetherdonatedblood.The blood collected during NCDOT's blood drive was enough to potentially save 39 lives.
"People need blood all the time," said NCDOT employee and long-time blood donorSherrie Rich, of Shelby. "It only takes a moment of your time, and it doesn't cost you anything."
Rich said she has donated more than seven gallons of blood in the last 20 years.
There's often a blood supply shortage in the summer months, when schools are out of session and people are away on vacation.

NCDOT's Division 12 includes Alexander, Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell and Lincoln counties.
