CHARLOTTE -The N.C. Department of Transportation is extending the closure for a section of Brantley Road over Lake Fisher in Kannapolis until further notice. NCDOT had estimated opening the bridge by this Friday, August 8.
Crews closed the bridge last month after a routine inspection of the structure revealed severe decay in one of the bridge's timber piles along with rust and corrosion in sections of the bridge's steel girders. NCDOT staff determined these issues required immediate attention and closed the bridge for the public's safety.
Crews have cleaned, cut and replaced beam ends since implementing the closure July 14.
Engineers are currently determining next steps in the repair process and the extent of those repairs.
Motorists should continue following the posted detour from Brantley Road to China Grove Road to Lane Street to Old Salisbury-Concord Road back to Brantley Road.
NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
