RALEIGH -Some say it's a cross between an engineering and an architectural competition. A little bit of art and a lot of science and math. The N. C. Department of Transportation's annual bridge building competition is just the type of matchup that makes NCDOT engineers wish they were in school again.
On Friday, March 7 (Friday, March 14 for regions 2, 3 4)middle and high school students across the state will show off their brain power by taking part in a model bridge building competition in four regional competitions statewide.
The event is designed to create a greater awareness of careers in transportation, construction, engineering and other services provided by the NCDOT. It's also a method to help students make the connection between what is taught in the classroom and how science and math lessons translate into future careers.
Working in teams, students brainstormed ideas, designed a bridge diagram, constructed the model and will now present their ideas to a panel of judges.
The competitions will take place in four regions across the state starting at 9 a.m. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m.
