RALEIGH -The N.C. Department of Transportation's Rail Division has made crossing safety improvements at two intersections in Pitt County.
NCDOT installed crossing signals and gates where Boyd Street and Liberty Street intersect the CSX railroad tracks in Winterville. These projects, totaling $436,021, were paid for with a combination of state and federal funds. Maintenance funding for the projects will be divided equally between the state and CSX.
Two freight trains a day travel through the Boyd Street and Liberty Street crossings at a maximum of 25 miles per hour.
This project is a part of a comprehensive statewide NCDOT program to enhance highway safety by adding or improving signals and gates at public railroad crossings. Automatic warning devices are now in place at more than 2,600 of the 3,800 public at-grade crossings across the state.
