Four lanes in both directions will open to traffic
CHARLOTTE -Citizens will soon drive on a wider segment of I-85 in Concord as the N.C. Department of Transportation plans to open additional lanes on the $125.2 million I-85 widening project between Bruton Smith Boulevard (Exit 49) and N.C. 73 (Exit 55) this weekend, weather permitting. The project will expand I-85 from two to four lanes in each direction.
Beginning at 9 p.m. Friday, April 4, crews will open lanes on I-85 North in the project limits, wrapping up by 6 a.m. Saturday, April 5. Work will continue on I-85 South from 9 p.m. Saturday until 6 a.m. Sunday, April 6.
Intermittent lane closures will continue at night for the next few weeks while crews complete placing permanent lane markings on the roadway. Additional work north of N.C. 73 to the end of the project includes shoulder paving and placing permanent pavement markings, so this smaller segment will be in its final pattern in the coming days. Because of the ongoing work on I-85, the speed limit will remain 55 miles an hour.
NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
