CHARLOTTE -The N.C. Department of Transportation is preparing to open a secondwestbound lane on the state's third diverging diamond interchange (DDI) on Catawba Avenue over I-77 in Cornelius Friday, Oct. 31. The $5.4 million project was awarded in October 2013 to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion and crashes when traffic backs up on the ramps.
Additional aesthetics proposed by the Town of Cornelius can be seen here, as well as a video simulation showing traffic moving through a DDI. Intermittent lane closures will be necessary to continue construction activities through the end of November.
Earlier this fall, NCDOT opened the state's first DDI at the I-85/Poplar Tent Road interchange in Concord, and this month opened a second at the I-85/N.C. 73 interchange, also in Concord. A fourth is currently under construction at the future I-485/Mallard Creek Road interchange in Charlotte.
