NCDOT To Begin Replacing Burke County Bridge Next Week

SHELBY-- OnMonday, Oct. 13, theN.C. Department of Transportationwill begin replacing a bridgeon Enola Road near Denton Avenue in south Morganton. Traffic will use an off-site detour whilea portion of Enola Roadis closed for the project.

Traffic headed south on Enola Roadwill be detouredaround the construction site onto Old Colony Road, thenOld N.C. 18 and back to Enola Road. Northbound traffic will reverse the route.

Theexistingbridge on Enola Roadwas built in 1963 and is considered functionally obsolete. That means that the bridge was built to design standards no longer in use and needs to be replaced.

The project is scheduled for completion in early spring 2015. It is part of a $8.1 million contract to replace seven bridges in Buncombe, Burke, Madison, McDowell and Rutherford counties.
