65 mph limit will be reinstated
CHARLOTTE -Effective Friday, June 6, motorists traveling on I-85 in Concord will again be able to drive 65 mph in both directions between Bruton Smith Boulevard (Exit 49) and N.C. 73 (Exit 55). The N.C. Department of Transportation reduced the speed limit through this area in November 2011 during the interstate's expansion from four lanes to eight lanes, allowing safer conditions for crews working on the project. With four lanes now open in each direction, the department is lifting the speed limit reduction.
Motorists traveling south of Exit 49 into Charlotte will still need to adhere to the 55 mph reduction as work continues on the I-85/I-485 turbine interchange through the end of the year. The reduction will be in place in both directions from south of Mallard Creek Church Road (Exit 46) to the Cabarrus County line.
