NCDOT Truck Involved in Edgecombe County Accident

RALEIGH - An NCDOT excavator truck was involved in an accident with another vehicle on N.C. 111 in Edgecombe County Tuesday morning shortly after leaving the maintenance yard. Authorities say the driver of the other vehicle died at the scene. The NCDOT employee driving the truck was shaken, but not injured."Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the driver who died in this tragic accident and with our employee who was involved. Safety is always the number one priority in everything we do. Our team will work closely with law enforcement to investigate and thoroughly review all of our safety procedures to understand how this happened and what steps we can take to prevent something like this from happening again," said NCDOT Secretary Tony Tata.The Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. As standard procedure, NCDOT will conduct its own investigation, thoroughly inspect the truck involved, and is reviewing its safety procedures statewide. The employee will go through the required medical screening following this incident. Safety personnel from two divisions will conduct the internal investigation.
