Weather permitting, the N.C. Department of Transportation
will close the eastbound right lane on Catawba Avenue over I-77 at 9 p.m. Sunday, March 2. The closure will stay in place until 6 a.m. Wednesday, March 5. The work is part of a $5.4 million contract to build a diverging diamond interchange
, which will improve traffic flow and reduce congestion and crashes when traffic backs up on the ramps.
The diverging diamond allows traffic moving in two directions to temporarily cross the left side of the road. The concept also improves safety by allowing free flowing turns when exiting or entering the interstate. This video shows traffic moving seamlessly through the interchange.
NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
