SHELBY -Beginning Monday, April 14, the N.C.
Department of Transportation will close Osborne Memorial Road in Alleghany
County to replace a bridge over Elk Creek.
The existing structure was built in 1962 and is considered
functionally obsolete and structurally deficient, meaning that although the
bridge is safe it was built to design standards no longer in use and needs to
be replaced.
During construction, an off-site detour will be in place to
help motorists navigate the closure. The detour will utilize N.C. 93 and Mount
Carmel Road.
The new bridge is scheduled for completion in early
November.
Smith-Rowe, LLC of Mount Airy was awarded the $808,038
contract for the project in February.
