Shelby - On Monday, Feb. 24,The N.C. Department of Transportation is scheduled to begin a resurfacing project on U.S. 321 in Gaston County from Grier Beam Boulevard to the Lincoln County Line.
That eight-mile stretch of U.S. 321 is a heavily traveled section of highway, especially for trucks traveling between Interstate 85 and Interstate 40. Blythe Construction Company Inc., of Charlotte, was awarded the $7.7 million contract for the project in October 2013.
The first part of the resurfacing project will have minimal impact to traffic. Beginning March 3, however, crews will be working on both directions of the highway, and traffic will be reduced to one lane. Motorists are advised to stay alert when traveling through the area. Portable message signs will be in place to help drivers navigate the lane closures.
The project also includes adding two inches of pavement to the road to fortify the highway against an increasing amount of traffic. Work is expected to be complete by July.
