SHELBY -On Wednesday, April 2, the N.C. Department of Transportation will begin
replacing a bridge over Old Field Creek on Railroad Grade Road in Ashe County.
The $466,180 contract
includes grading, drainage, paving and replacing the existing structure with
a new bridge. The current bridge was built in 1970 and is considered
structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. That means that although
the bridge is safe, it was built to outdated design standards and needs to be
replaced.
During the project,
Railroad Grade Road will be closed to traffic. Motorists traveling through
the area will take U.S. 221 to Liberty Grove Church Road and then return to
Railroad Grade Road. Portable traffic signals will be in place throughout the
duration of the construction to help motorists navigate the closure.
The new bridge is scheduled
to open to traffic in early August. The contractor for this bridge project is
J.R. Vannoy and Sons Construction Company of Jefferson.
